SeaChoice Sustainable Seafood
SeaChoice represents a comprehensive framework of guidelines, providing retailers and consumers with specifics about what is truly sustainable, what is incomplete or in transition, and what is unsustainable in the various categories of seafood. Factors included in the standard are current stock and fishing levels, management practices, and environmental issues and threats.
The key mechanism in the SeaChoice standard is their GREEN (recommended), YELLOW (some concern), and RED (avoid) product categorizing.
Notable is the inclusion of farmed atlantic salmon in the red AVOID category. Retailers that follow the SeaChoice standard have removed all open-net pen farmed salmon from their shelves. In Western Canada, Canada Safeway initiated adoption of the standard in 2013 with the goal of complete removal by 2015 of all open-net pen farmed salmon.
